I stood in front of the police station, which was my "office". Ready for another day at work; finding and fighting the bad guys.
We were a team of five, Me, Gina, Dong-Min, Seojun and until last week Jimin. Jimin had made a promotion as of per today, as it was the first day of a new month.
I as usual arrived before 9 at the office. It wasn't like I was special though; most of our team arrived earlier. Our team was focused and specialized in theft and robberies from stores and other bigger organizations such as banks.
The latter was the exact reason I was here. We would be called upon when an anti-robbery button was activated by an employee of such an organization for example.
Gina was our team leader, she had been in the robbery division for over 10 years now. As I walked in our area, she rushed my way.
'Time for morning coffee?' she asked with excitement which was odd considering it was a Monday morning.
'uhm okay sure?' I replied and I followed her to the room in which the coffee machine was located.
'Cappuccino?' she asked, as that was my usual drink in the morning. I nodded affirmatively.
When she handed it to me I could see that twinkle in her eyes, impatient to ask me something
'so can you tell me now why you dragged me here?' I asked with a scoff.
'Sooooo did something happen between you and Jimin last Friday? you two were gone for a while at the bar and we were curious.'
I shook my head with a chuckle. Gina was in the beginning of her 30s yet she sometimes acted as we were in high school. but to be fair there wasn't too much drama happening at the police so whenever there was some juicy gossip Gina got all excited. I shook my head
'nope'
It was a lie, but she didn't need to know that. plus if she knew the truth then by the end of the day everyone would.
She pouted at me 'I was thinking that finally after these months of pining over each other something might have happened? We thought it would be a good time considering you are not in the same team anymore? you can date without issues?'
It was true, I had been crushing on Jimin for so long now. Ever since he joined the team I couldn't deny this attraction I felt towards him. It didn't mean we immediately connected or something, Jimin was distant and hard to approach.
In the beginning he was also very much a loner, not attending our team dinners or anything. He would repeatedly say he was here "to work" and take his job "seriously".
I mean it's not like we didn't take the work seriously, but especially if your line of work was dangerous it was important to have these team meetings to enjoy yourself as well. But gradually over time he opened up more, well not to everyone, mostly to me. That's also why the others repeatedly suggested that he had a thing for me.
I always caught myself hoping that it was true, and considering what happened Friday, perhaps it was, but then again how we left it would suggest the opposite. Though that was the thing with Jimin; it was almost impossible to read him.
'Let's head back. I heard the chief wanted to address us a bit before 9 so I guess he has something important to say..' Gina indicated while I was deep in my train of thoughts.
'Sure, could you take my cappuccino for a bit, then I will make a stop at the toilet first'.
Gina nodded and took the cup I handed to her. I was in the cubicle when I heard two girls discuss something which quickly caught my attention
'so this is the day that Jimin guy officially starts in your team right?'
'yes, but we are on patrol and he will just stay here to read himself in' the other girl answered
'He is from the anti-robbery squad right?'
'yes'
'He is very handsome' the girl excitedly said and I instantly got annoyed.
'hmm yes, but he is so intimidating, I mean I met him once when he was introduced to the team last week and the guy seems as if he could never smile'
I chuckled, what she said was pretty relatable, considering I had felt the same the first time I met him.
I walked out and the two girls instantly flustered and rushed out. I smiled to myself in the mirror, that was pretty funny
I left the toilet and then thought about why the chief would even come to see us. I hardly saw the chief around, he was always "busy". so the fact he came to give us some sort of speech or something was an exception, and probably therefore important.
As I returned I saw Mr Min already approaching my team so I quickly joined them. The thing about Mr Min was that he looked intimidating but he in reality he was pretty much a softie. For a police chief that was pretty rare.
Though; don't get me wrong, he could be savage and scary when he needed to be. I think professionally he was the one that most felons feared, and that says something. but if you knew him, as a member of the police he was nice.
'Hello my favorite anti-robbery squad' he said as a greeting and we all exchanged a glance with a smile. He would say this knowing we were the only anti-robbery squad under his command.
'Chief Min, to what do we owe the honors' Gina asked, as a way to quickly get to the point.
'Straight to business I see, well as Mr park made his promotion there was a vacancy within the team, we have found someone to fill this gap. This person is more specialized in the technical department, he has supported the police in the past, during his time in the academy, with counter-hacking and catching hackers, please give him a warm welcome on his first day.'
A new person? So quickly? and why didn't they communicate this earlier? it made sense that the position that freed up with Jimin's departure had to be filled but I guess I expected a longer process. as I looked around I saw that more teammates were rather taken aback by this announcement. Even Gina as team leader.
It wasn't uncommon that the chief would suddenly decide something and push that decision through because in the end he did have all the power.
'ah there you have him, exactly on time!'
I turned around as Mr Min happily eyed the entrance door. I was surprised by the sight of the person coming in, as he was not a stranger at all but someone that I used to know.
